Senior citizens are particularly vulnerable to hunger, especially at the end of the month when their funds are depleted. Often they are faced with having to make a difficult decision about whether to purchase food, fill their prescriptions for medications, or pay the rent or utility bills.
Since 1984, our Brown Bag for the Elderly program has provided grocery assistance to seniors who are 60 years of age and older, who meet the income eligibility requirements.
Each month, volunteers assist food bank staff in carefully packing 1,776 grocery bags with nutritious foods to supplement the diets of seniors in need. With the help of community partners, the bags of food are distributed to those seniors who are eligible. In 2019, 21,312 Brown Bags for the Elderly containing 504,063 pounds of food were distributed with the help of partner agencies and senior centers.
