Our Programs > Kids Cafe> Kids Cafe Quick Facts

Kids Cafe is an afterschool meal program for school-age children who are at-risk for hunger. America's Second Harvest operates the program in collaboration with other community organizations that provide afterschool programs for disadvantaged children. Kids Cafe started in 1989 when two brothers were found in a local community center kitchen looking for food. The program ensures that children have a safe, nurturing place to go during the critical hours after school when parents are often working.

From its Savannah beginnings, Kids Cafe has become one of the nation's largest charitable meal and nutrition education programs exclusively for children in need. Each Kids Cafe is designed to meet the needs of the children living in that neighborhood. While no two programs are identical, each shares the common goal of providing a safe, respectful environment where youth can receive wholesome meals and participate in activities like tutoring, homework assistance, nutrition education, sports programs and cultural enrichment.

The success of Kids Cafe is the result of strong relationships that America's Second Harvest has established with many segments of the community. These relationships have produced a committed group of funders, volunteers and partners that allow ASH to feed more than 2,500 children each day.

YOU can help with Kids Cafe! Here's how:

  • Volunteer to assist with homework, listen to children read, or share your favorite arts & crafts
  • Partner with America's Second Harvest to Host a Kids Cafe site (FAQ)
  • Sponsor a Kids Cafe site to make it possible to feed more children
  • Donate funds, food, or supplies
