Second Harvest recognized a need to assist low-income working families and individuals attempting to re-enter the labor market after involvement with the criminal justice system, caring for family members or dealing with mental and physical health challenges. In response to these growing needs, Second Harvest started the Community Kitchen Culinary Arts Program in April 2003. The Community Kitchen program provides culinary job training to low-income adults to prepare them for careers in the food services industry. As part of their training, students also develop valuable professional and life skills including interviewing skills, supervising techniques and conflict management. The program entails 18 weeks of Culinary Arts Training, ServSafe Certification (food service safety), and Life Skills Instruction, including job readiness, resume writing, conflict management, communications skills, negotiation skills, reproductive and physical health, stress management, college preparation, home ownership, and financial literacy. As the students work toward self-sufficiency and earning a GED, they serve the community by preparing thousands of nutritious meals for our 28 Kids Café's each day. |
