Our Programs > Brown Bag For The Elderly

The Brown Bag Program has been providing groceries to low-income seniors since 1984. The bags containing enough food to make approximately 5 meals are packed by volunteers and distributed to more than 1,500 seniors during the third week of the month, when many individuals on fixed incomes are faced with difficult decisions about whether to purchase food or medications. All types of food are included, from canned goods, fresh bread, pastries and produce when available.

America's Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia serves 21 counties in the coastal area. 10,605 seniors in our community are living below the poverty level (U.S. Census 2000). Second Harvest's goal over the next 5 years is to expand its Brown Bag Program to serve all of its 21 counties.

In order to reach this goal, we need your support. Volunteers are needed on the third Saturday of each month to help us pack bags. Additionally, Second Harvest is searching for partner non-profit agencies to help us distribute to those in need. Additionally, we need both food and monetary donations to support the program.

In order to organize all volunteers effectively and ensure a pleasant experience, we ask that any groups wishing to volunteer for the Brown Bag Program please contact Kathy Jones at 912.236.6750 extension 17. Brown Bag preparation begins at 8 a.m. on designated Saturdays. For your safety, no sandals, clogs, flip flops or shoes exposing any part of the foot are allowed.
